What is the Senior Australians tax offset?

The Senior Australians tax offset is designed to provide a tax break for elderly, low-income Australians. In order to qualify for the tax offset you must pass three tests: age, income, and eligibility for Australian Government pensions.

If you are male, you must be

  • age 65 or older, or
  • a veteran or war widower age 60 or older.

If you are female, you must be

  • age 64 or older, or
  • a veteran or war widower age 59 or older.

If you are single your rebate income must be less than $48,525. If you are married your combined rebate income must be less than $78,992. If you and your spouse had to live apart due to illness or because one of you was in a nursing home your combine rebate income must be less than $91,840.

You must also be eligible for Australian Government pensions and similar payments.
